How to get started, what the readings mean, and how to control what the app remembers.
Getting started
Squeeze is preparing for its first App Store release. The current measurement setup is tuned for iPhone 16 Pro. Readings on other phone models have not been validated.
- Remove the case and hold the phone upright, with the screen facing you.
- Choose the hand you will use. If asked, enter a name, tap Save, then choose Remember me or Play without remembering. The second choice skips face recognition; it still saves your name and results, plus trial face crops and the latest clip when the camera is enabled. Place your palm along the guide on one long edge and your fingertips on the marks on the other, below the buttons.
- Tap the play button and follow the cues. Start with a relaxed hold, then grip when the screen prompts you. Keep your grip steady until it asks you to relax.
- Rest between attempts. Your best attempt can earn a place on the local board, and your row opens your history.
Keep the phone secure. Do not bend it, press on damaged glass or grip through pain. If you have an injury or a health concern, ask a qualified professional whether this activity is suitable for you.
What the readings mean
Does this measure calibrated grip strength?
No. The kilogram and pound readings are experimental estimates, not calibrated grip-strength measurements. The app is for play and personal curiosity, not health assessment.
Why can the reading change between attempts?
Phone model, hand position, movement, the case and the way you hold the phone can affect the reading. Keep your setup consistent and allow time to rest. A change in the app’s number does not by itself show a change in physical strength.
What does the ≥ symbol mean?
The app cannot provide a precise value beyond the displayed estimate. All readings, including those marked ≥, remain provisional.
Can I compare people or age groups?
The local board orders the app’s estimated readings. It does not prove who is strongest. Age-based comparisons are approximate and do not provide a health assessment or establish a verified strength percentile.
Can I use pounds?
Yes. Use the kg/lb control on the app’s page. Changing the unit changes how the same estimate is displayed.
Reference data
Adult reference data adapted from Tomkinson et al. (2025), International norms for adult handgrip strength. Values selected and adapted for display. The authors do not endorse Squeeze.

Permissions and controls
Camera
The front camera supports the live selfie, face stickers and the trial clip. If you choose Remember me, it can also recognise you as a returning player. Face recognition runs on your iPhone. You can manage camera permission in iOS Settings.
Microphone
The app may request microphone access for its measurement features. Ordinary play does not keep ambient audio recordings. The shared selfie clip does not include an audio track.
Photos
Squeeze requests permission to add a clip or card to Photos when you choose to save or share that way. It does not need to browse your photo library.
Side buttons
Keep your fingers clear of the buttons. iOS limits which physical button actions an app can intercept. Guided Access in iOS Accessibility settings can help keep an activity on screen; follow Apple’s setup instructions for your iOS version.
Names, faces and saved attempts
It greeted me with someone else’s name.
Tap not you? and enter your name. Similar faces or a different camera angle can confuse recognition. This is a convenience for the local game, not an identity check.
How do I remove a person?
In the remembered-faces area below the board, select their face and choose Forget. Read the confirmation before deleting. It removes their remembered face data, scores, profile details and associated face crops. It also clears the latest kept clip, even if the clip came from another turn.
How do I remove a guest player?
Players who chose Play without remembering are not listed as remembered faces. Choose Forget all to clear their saved records along with the app’s other saved data.
How do I erase everything?
Choose Forget all below the board and confirm. It removes the app’s saved people, attempts, face data, kept clip and raw measurement logs. Copies you have already exported to Photos or another service must be deleted there separately.
Do I need an account?
No. The app’s board and saved history are local. There is no Squeeze account or online leaderboard.
Still need a hand?
Tell us your iPhone model, iOS version and what happened. If you can, include the app version and the steps that led to the problem.
Please don’t include face recordings, health information or anyone else’s personal details unless they are needed and you have their permission.
